In Autumn 2018 Create ran an open selection process, with the support of LBBD, the GLA and the Arts Council, to select the artist-tenants for A House for Artists.
We put emphasis on ensuring that the artists living in A House for Artists would include a mix of ages, backgrounds and artistic practice, as well as local expertise and experience of working with community groups.
The process reflected learning from our Panic! research into inequality in the arts and cultural sectors by prioritising artists without the support structures of more affluent cultural workers. The 16 artists selected to live in A House for Artists range in age from 23 to 70 years old and include a broad range of skills and experience. Over half live and/ or work in the borough of which a third grew up in Barking and Dagenham. Three quarters identify as working class and a third are BAME. Read more about the artists here.
