Create London and muf architecture + art worked closely with residents in the design process of refurbishing a very run-down, but much-used playground in the Camel Road and Drew Road Estate, North Woolwich. Unveiled in July 2022, the space now includes new and repurposed play equipment, an obstacle course, community planting beds, and an events area for street parties centred around a custom-built table tennis table.
Well-designed aspects of the original metalwork, play equipment and the surrounding fence were retained and reused. Planting was designed and undertaken by resident and gardener Mo Parker. The table tennis table and bespoke seating were designed and built in the community with young people through a series of workshops.
The project was supported by The Big Lottery, Veolia, Newham’s Community Assembly and Create Your Docks.
