Open Call: Emerging Filmmakers

Tuesday, 22 August 2023

Create London invites emerging artists and filmmakers with connections to Barking & Dagenham to apply for two moving image commissions. This opportunity is part of the Breaking Waves programme, which explores the connection between the contemporary climate crisis and industrial heritage. Presented by Create London and supported by the National Heritage Lottery Fund. Additional support from Arts Council England and Art Fund.

We are seeking those who are interested in making works that delve into the area’s history and heritage, exploring some or all of the central themes of Breaking Waves. These include:

  • Changes to Barking Riverside/Thames Ward over time
  • The local impact of the climate crisis on human and non-human life
  • The relationship between the area’s industrial heritage and natural environment
  • The history of industry or movement along the Thames/River Roding
  • Forced migration as a result of the climate crisis

Selected filmmakers will receive a ÂŁ5,000 commissioning fee to create a 5-minute film. They will also benefit from mentorship by film industry experts Shannon Murphy, BAFTA nominated director, and Darragh Mortell, writer and director for BBC Wales and Radio 4. The works will be publicly presented at Eastbury Manor House.
