Based in the former lamp room of an historic lighthouse, Longplayer is a 1,000-year-long musical composition that started at midnight on 31 December 1999 and will play without repetition until the end of 2999, at which point it will begin again. Conceived and composed by Jem Finer, it is based around the sounds of Tibetan singing bowls, an ancient type of standing bell that can be played by both humans and machines, and by whoever – or whatever – may wish to play it thousands of years from now. The artist Richard Wilson will open a summer-long series of talks and events on 29 June, speaking about his use of film in sculpture.
